Reopen the chapter and compare your explanation with the page.

- Did you state the main idea correctly?
- Did you reverse a cause and effect?
- Did you omit a condition or exception?

- Did you confuse the author's claim with an example?
- Can you return to the evidence or diagram later?
Add the page, section, figure, or example reference. A concise note remains useful only when it provides a route back to important context.
If software generated a draft note, apply the same check. A clean summary can still omit a limitation or use a term incorrectly. Keep the textbook attached or easy to reopen.
4. Keep only details with a clear role
Use this test for each detail: “What will I do with this during class, an assignment, or review?”

Notes become study material when you use them to retrieve an answer.
Turn each major heading into one prompt. Add prompts for comparisons, applications, diagrams, and common errors.
Examples:
- What are the parts of the working memory model?
- How does this experiment support the model?
- Which result would challenge the explanation?
- Draw the process without looking.
- Apply the formula to a new problem.

Worked example: a cognitive psychology chapter
Imagine a student reads a chapter section about working memory.
The heading is “The multicomponent model.” The student changes it into this question:
What components does the model propose, and what evidence distinguishes their roles?
After reading the section, the student hides the page and writes:
“The model treats working memory as a system with separate but coordinated components. One component directs attention. Other components hold verbal and visual-spatial information for a short period.”
The student checks the chapter and finds two problems. The note lacks the exact component names, and it does not mention the model's later episodic buffer. The student adds those terms, checks their definitions, and records the relevant pages.
Next, the student keeps one experiment that helps distinguish verbal from visual-spatial processing. They leave out two repeated examples. They link the reading note to the lecture that compares this model with a competing account.
Finally, they add three prompts:
- Draw and label the model from memory.
- Explain the evidence for separate verbal and visual-spatial components.
- Compare the model with the account used in the lecture.
The finished note is much shorter than the chapter. It still preserves the terms, evidence, and source path needed for accurate study.
