2. Read one manageable section

Choose one heading, a few pages, or one connected argument. Read for meaning before trying to collect every detail.

Ask:

  • What question does this section answer?
  • Which claim or process is central?
  • What evidence or example supports it?
  • Which condition or exception could change the answer?
  • What remains unclear?

Stop at a conceptual boundary, not an arbitrary page count.

3. Annotate for navigation and questions

Highlight sparingly. Add a brief comment that records why the passage matters.

Useful annotation labels include:

4. Close the PDF and retrieve

Hide the page completely. Do not keep the answer visible in a split-screen window.

Match the attempt to the material:

  • redraw the diagram without labels
  • rebuild a comparison table
  • solve a fresh problem
  • state the claim, evidence, and limitation
  • teach the section aloud in simple language

Give yourself enough time to make a genuine attempt. Difficulty is useful information. It shows where the source is not yet available from memory.

5. Reopen the source and diagnose the gap

Compare your attempt with the exact PDF passage, figure, or table. Avoid judging the whole answer as simply right or wrong.

Name the gap:

  • missing term
  • reversed relationship
  • omitted condition

  • confused sequence
  • correct conclusion with weak reasoning
  • accurate idea with an incorrect symbol or unit

Then close the PDF and produce the corrected part once more. Copying the source into your notes does not test whether the correction is retrievable.
