To use bidirectional links for studying, connect two notes only when you can explain why they belong together. Add the link beside the relevant idea, state the relationship in a short phrase, and use the automatic backlink to recover the connection from the other note. During revision, follow a small set of useful links, then close the notes and retrieve the ideas from memory.
Links make a study library easier to navigate. They do not prove that you understand the material, so each linking session should end with an explanation, comparison, problem, or recall prompt.

What are bidirectional links in study notes?
A normal link points from one note to another. If a lecture note about classical conditioning links to a note about extinction, you can follow that link while reading the lecture.
A backlink shows the same relationship from the opposite side. When you open the extinction note, its backlinks reveal that the classical-conditioning lecture refers to it. You created one link, but you can discover and navigate the relationship from either note.
The official Obsidian guide to backlinks uses this practical definition: a backlink is a link from another note to the note you are currently viewing. The exact buttons and syntax vary between note-taking apps, but the study principle is independent of the software.
Bidirectional linking is most useful when your material has overlapping contexts:
- a lecture introduces a theory and a reading supplies evidence
- a biology note depends on a chemistry concept
- a worked example applies a formula explained elsewhere
- a later seminar challenges an earlier interpretation
- feedback corrects a mistake that appears in several topic notes
The backlink keeps the older note connected to material you add later. That matters because a note can remain in its original course or module folder while still participating in a wider network of ideas.
Use folders for location and links for relationships
Folders and bidirectional links answer different questions.
A folder answers, “Where does this note belong?” A link answers, “Why should I read these notes together?”
For example, a note may live at:

That note could link to a research-methods note about experimental controls, a neuroscience note about fear responses, and a journal-article note that reports an extinction study. Moving all four notes into one folder would hide their primary course context. Linking them preserves both location and relationship.

How to use bidirectional links for studying step by step
1. Start from one anchor note
Open the note you are studying now. It might be today's lecture, a textbook chapter, a worked problem, or an exam topic.
Do not begin by searching your whole library for everything that might be related. Read the anchor note and identify one place where another explanation, example, prerequisite, or challenge would genuinely help.
For a lecture on inflation, useful candidates might include:
- a reading that explains the consumer price index
- a statistics note about weighted averages
- a historical case of supply shock inflation
- a tutorial problem that applies the equation
Choose the most useful connection first. A small network built around real study needs is easier to maintain than a graph designed in advance.
2. Keep each note focused enough to link
A link should take you to a note that answers a recognizable question. Economics Week 4 is difficult to link precisely because it may contain several unrelated ideas. How the consumer price index is weighted gives the connection a clear destination.
This does not mean every sentence needs its own note. Split a long note only when one section:
- is reused in several topics
- needs its own source or verification
- is likely to change independently
- answers a distinct revision question
Over-splitting creates navigation work. Under-splitting makes every link land on a large document you must search again.
3. Link at the point where the relationship matters
Place the link beside the claim, example, or question that needs it. Avoid collecting unexplained links at the bottom of the note.
Weak:

Stronger:
The 1970s oil shock is an example of cost-push inflation; compare the causes and policy response in [the historical case note].
The stronger version records why the link exists. Months later, you can decide whether it supplies evidence, an example, a contrast, or a prerequisite without opening several notes first.

Cornell's Learning Strategies Center makes a similar recommendation for concept mapping: naming how ideas relate is a central part of building a useful map. A note network is not identical to a visual concept map, but both become clearer when the connection has meaning.
4. Open the destination and inspect the backlink
After creating the link, open the destination note and view its backlinks. Ask whether the incoming connection makes sense from this side.
Suppose a lecture note links to a study about working memory with the phrase provides evidence for. From the study note, the backlink should help you recover which lecture claim used that evidence. If the source note has a vague title or the surrounding sentence does not explain the claim, fix the context now.
You usually do not need to add a second manual link back. The automatic backlink already records the incoming reference. Add text to the destination only when the reverse direction needs a different explanation.
5. Connect lectures to readings without duplicating them
Lecture notes and reading notes often overlap, but they do different jobs. A lecture signals course emphasis. A reading may provide detail, evidence, or a competing interpretation.
Keep both notes intact. Link the lecture to the exact reading note where it:
- defines a compressed term more fully
- reports evidence for a claim
- introduces an exception
- disputes the lecturer's interpretation
- supplies a case you can use in an answer
Do not paste the whole reading summary into the lecture note. A short relationship sentence plus a link preserves the reading's source context and prevents two copies from drifting apart.

6. Build a short revision trail
When revising, start with one exam objective rather than opening the entire link graph.
For an objective such as Compare two models of attention and evaluate the evidence, follow a deliberate trail:
- the anchor note defining the models
- a linked lecture that explains the first model
- a reading note that supplies supporting evidence
- a contrasting study found through a backlink
- a tutorial note with an application question
Stop when the set answers the objective. More connected notes are not automatically more useful.

7. Turn the connections into retrieval
Following links is still open-note review. Finish by closing the material and reconstructing the relationships.
Try one of these prompts:
- Explain why Note A links to Note B without looking.
- Draw the five-note revision trail from memory and label every connection.
- Compare the two linked theories in a blank table.
- Solve the linked example, then check the method note.
- Name one note that challenges the anchor note and explain why.
Carnegie Mellon University's guide to retrieval practice describes recall from memory, followed by feedback, as active learning. Your linked notes provide the feedback layer: after an attempt, reopen the relevant note, check the source, and correct the missing relationship.
A worked example: linking a lecture, reading, and tutorial
Imagine a psychology student studying working memory. Their anchor note is PSY 201 | Working-memory models | Lecture 6.
The lecture describes the phonological loop, so the student adds:
The word-length effect is used as evidence for a limited phonological store; see [Reading | Word-length experiments] for the method and result.
The reading note now has a backlink to Lecture 6. A week later, a tutorial note questions whether the result supports only one model. The student links that tutorial to the reading with:
This alternative explanation challenges how Lecture 6 interpreted the experiment.
Before the exam, the student opens the lecture, follows the evidence link, and discovers the tutorial through the reading's backlink. They then close all three notes and answer:
What does the word-length effect show, and what is one limitation of using it as evidence?
The links did not merge the notes or produce the answer. They made the evidence and criticism easier to retrieve as a connected set.
Common bidirectional linking mistakes
Linking every repeated word
Repeated vocabulary does not always indicate a useful relationship. Link when the destination adds context you expect to use.
Creating links without relationship text
A bare link saves a destination but loses your reasoning. Add a verb or short phrase that explains the connection.
Treating a graph as proof of understanding
A dense network can be visually satisfying while hiding weak explanations. Test the network with closed-note recall, comparison, or application.
Replacing citations with internal links
An internal link helps you navigate your own library. It does not replace the author, title, page, timestamp, or citation required to verify and use the original source.
Forcing every connection into both notes
Automatic backlinks already expose the incoming relationship. Duplicate text only when each direction needs genuinely different context.
Never pruning old links
Course interpretations change, titles improve, and weak relationships become obvious. During a weekly review, remove links that no longer help you explain, compare, verify, or retrieve material.
A practical linked-note checklist
Before keeping a new link, check that:
- both notes have clear titles
- the destination adds a specific explanation, example, contrast, or source
- the surrounding sentence says why the link matters
- the backlink is understandable from the destination
- the original source details remain available
- the connection supports a real study question
- you can test the relationship without looking
