How to make a quiz from study notes step by step

1. Choose one small quiz scope

Start with one lecture, reading section, lab, or exam objective. A narrow scope makes gaps easier to diagnose.

“Week 4 economics” is too broad. “Opportunity cost and sunk costs from Lecture 4” is specific enough for a short quiz.

Collect the material that defines the answers. This might include:

  • your checked lecture note;
  • the relevant slide pages;
  • an assigned textbook section;
  • tutor corrections or an official answer sheet;
  • diagrams that the quiz must test.

Remove duplicated or unverified notes before question writing. If two sources disagree, resolve the conflict or mark it for your instructor. Do not create a confident answer from uncertain material.

2. Write the learning targets first

List what you should be able to do after studying the topic. Use observable actions such as define, compare, calculate, explain, identify, or apply.

For the economics topic, the targets might be:

  • define opportunity cost;
  • distinguish an opportunity cost from a monetary price;

3. Turn each target into a retrieval question

Write the question before you look at the exact wording in the note. This reduces accidental copying. Then compare your draft with the source and correct its scope.

4. Mix question formats with a purpose

Different formats reveal different gaps. Use each format for a reason.

Short answer checks whether you can produce an idea without cues. It works well for definitions, processes, and brief explanations.

Multiple choice checks whether you can distinguish the correct answer from plausible alternatives. It works only when one option is clearly best.

Sequence questions check ordered processes. Ask the learner to arrange steps before showing the correct order.

Application questions place an idea in a new situation. They test whether you can use knowledge instead of only repeat it.

5. Write fair multiple-choice options

A weak multiple-choice question can be answered through wording clues. A useful question requires subject knowledge.

Use these checks:

  • Keep all options grammatically consistent with the question.
  • Make distractors plausible, but clearly wrong under the stated conditions.
  • Avoid joke answers and options from unrelated topics.
  • Do not make the correct option much longer than the others.
  • Avoid “all of the above” when you want one precise diagnosis.
  • State any necessary assumption in the question.

Do not create distractors by changing one word in a true statement without checking the result. That method can produce a second correct answer.

6. Build the answer key from the source

Write the answer immediately after each question draft. Add a brief explanation and a source pointer.

A useful answer-key entry has four parts:

  1. the expected answer;
  2. why it is correct;
  3. why a tempting alternative is wrong;
  4. where the learner can verify it.

For example:

Question: A student paid for a course but now finds that it does not meet their goal. Which cost should not control the next decision?

Answer: The payment already made is a sunk cost. The next decision should compare future costs and benefits.

7. Take the quiz closed-book

Hide the notes and answer key. Set a modest time limit only when speed matters for the real assessment.

Write an answer before you reveal feedback. A vague feeling of recognition is not the same as retrieval. If you cannot answer, mark the question and continue.

Do not stop at the score. Label each missed answer:

  • Knowledge gap: The required idea was missing from memory.
  • Confusion: Two related ideas were mixed together.
  • Application gap: The rule was known, but not used correctly.
  • Question defect: The wording or answer key was ambiguous.
  • Source problem: The note was incomplete or unsupported.

Review the relevant source, repair the note, and answer the missed question again later. Replace defective questions instead of memorizing their flaws.

A worked example from one study note

Assume a note contains these checked points:

  • Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best alternative given up.
  • A sunk cost has already occurred and cannot be recovered.
  • Future choices should compare future costs and benefits.

How to use AI without trusting the draft blindly

AI is useful for expanding checked targets into varied questions. It can also create plausible but unsupported answers. Keep the source and the answer key visible during review.

Use a prompt with explicit limits:

Using only the study note below, create a 12-question practice quiz.
Test the listed learning targets.
Include four short-answer, four multiple-choice, and four application questions.
Give one clearly correct answer for each question.
Add a brief explanation and cite the source heading after each answer.
Mark any target that the note cannot support. Do not add outside facts.

Then inspect every generated item. Check names, dates, formulas, units, exceptions, and causal claims against the original material. Reject questions that the note cannot answer.
